I went on a fabulous road trip this summer holiday and Chengdu were the last stop. For travellers seeking a fulfilling day of cultural exploration and local flavour, I would strongly recommend a day trip combining Kuanzhai Alley (KuanZhaiXiangZi) and Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum (DuFuCaoTang).
Start your day at Kuanzhai Alley, one of Chengdu’s most famous ancient neighbourhoods. Located in the Jinli area, this historic street is a living testament to Chengdu’s traditional architecture and lively atmosphere. The street is lined with well-preserved Qing Dynasty buildings, teahouses, snack stalls, and shops selling local handicrafts. Visitors can immerse themselves in Sichuan culture by strolling along the narrow, winding alleyways, tasting authentic snacks like spicy hotpot, candied hawthorn, and Sichuan-style dumplings. After exploring Kuanzhai Alley, make your way to Du Fu Thatched Cottage, a hidden gem located slightly outside the bustling city centre. Originally built during the Ming Dynasty, this site is famous for its exquisite landscaping, rockeries, and classical pavilions. Visitors can walk through lush gardens, appreciate intricate woodwork, and learn about Chinese garden design. The site also features cultural exhibitions and calligraphy workshops, allowing visitors to engage more deeply with Sichuan’s artistic heritage. The calm environment provides a stark contrast to the energetic chaotic streets of Chengdu, making it a perfect spot to unwind and reflect.
In the late afternoon, return to the city and perhaps enjoy a Sichuan hotpot dinner, a culinary highlight of Chengdu, famous for its numbing spice and aromatic flavours. After dinner, you can stroll along the Jin River or relax at a local teahouse.
This one-day itinerary offers a balanced mix of history, culture, and local cuisine, giving visitors a true taste of Chengdu’s charm. From the lively streets of Kuanzhai Alley to the serene beauty of Du Fu Thatched Cottage, it’s an ideal way to experience the city’s rich traditions and laid-back spirit all in one day.
