The (Over)Use of AI

The sudden spike of AI globally has much to be said about where we are technologically. In certain aspects, it is a blessing: being able to fact check in seconds, getting creative ideas on new content, getting a rough idea on how best to approach a new obstacle in life. I have used AI often in terms of figuring out where to start on visa applications and international traveling laws.

However, along the boom of AI usage has come with it an overreliance, and the classroom is no exception to this.

AI is powerful. Teachers can create lesson plans in seconds and generate vocabulary examples on the fly. Even the usage of AI to create unique videos in order to teach something new is amazing. But teachers should remember to never lose the personal touch that is so important in this profession.

Teaching is a muscle of its own, and one that needs to be exercised regularly. AI can never take the place of a teacher fully – not without creating a generation of robots of its own.

While I use AI in the background as a crutch, I never let it take over the problem-solving of creating a personal lesson for the students I now know better. If I let myself be replaced by this tool, who’s to say that our students couldn’t also be replaced when they leave school?

Correct use of AI is a new-age skill that everyone is experiencing together. As the leaders of our classrooms, it’s important to ensure this experience does not become a detriment to our future.
